We let my grandfather go first.  His 76-year-old body shuffled up the steps and into the railroad car.  We followed closely behind, me carrying one of his smaller bags.  Once Grandpa had found a seat to his liking my father hefted the bags into the overhead luggage rack while I tried to avoid the smoke from Grandpa's ever-present cigar.  It was 1969.  I was 11.

I didn't know her well but I did know her, and for that I consider myself lucky.  Sue Brandt McBee was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1923, the same year that my maternal grandmother left that country for the United States.  At our initial meeting, I sensed that she was proud of her German heritage, as I am of mine, but prouder still to be an American.  I recall quizzing her on her early life and even exchanging a few words in German, her native language.  But when her family emigrated to the United States she left her old world in the past and quickly embraced a new American identity.
